Sucre

Sucre

Sucre is also known as the "City with Four Names," or the "White City," and is the Constitutional capital of the Republic of Bolivia. It is home to the Supreme Court and is the central axis of judicial power in the country. Situated in a valley surrounded by low mountains, its proud inhabitants consider it the most beautiful city in Bolivia. At an altitude of 2790 m (9,153ft), from here you can enjoy a great climate which includes the typical breeze that passes through the valleys of the Andes, allowing Sucre to delight in an ideal climate year round.  Its population, which does not exceed 100,000, takes great pleasure in this small, but beautiful city where it seems as though time stood still, maintaining much of its glorious past, 36 churches, small palaces, and famous theatres, such as the "Teatro Gran Mariscal de Ayacucho". For these reasons, Sucre was declared a Monument of the Americas and Patrimonio de la Humanidad (Patrimony of Humanity) by UNESCO. Walking through the center of the city one can discover the famous "House of Liberty," the place where Bolivia's independence was declared in 1825. The noble air that drifts throughout the streets allows the visitor to catch a glimpse of the significance this city has in the life of the Republic of Bolivia. La Universidad Mayor, Real y Pontificia de San Francisco Xavier was founded in 1624 (long before Harvard), granting Sucre its first touch of education and a cosmopolitan feeling, and is one of the most prestigious universities in the country. In the House of Money they minted the silver coins that financed the economic growth of all of Europe during the 17th Century.
